The year 1990 saw the birth of what would become one of the most extreme Death metal bands ever created in Quebec. PURULENCE went through a lot of good and bad times but still definitely carved a name for itself within the local and international underground with various releases, which are today considered as mandatory, cult releases. Formed by drummer Stephane Jolin and guitarist Stephane Gosselin, and later joined by ex-BLIND WITCHERY members Steeve Hurdle (guitar / vocals) and Donald Boisvert (bass), the embryo that would become PURULENCE started rehearsing original material and cover songs from Autopsy, Morbid Angel and Sepultura in their hometown of Sherbrooke, Quebecs death metal hotbed of the nineties. Various local gigs with bands such as RAZOR, SACRIFICE and a young band called GORGUTS led them into a management deal (with NEW WORLD MANAGEMENT, Rémi Coté, now running PROFUSION and PRODISK) and the bands debut demo ATROCIOUS EXECRATION, recorded and mixed by a new young producer known as Pierre Remillard. The first demo was well received (notably by METAL MANIACS and the now defunct MEAT Magazine) and sold close to 1000 units in less than a year. The above average packaging and disturbing, shocking artwork, created a stir locally, and pushed the bands name further and further. On the strength of its first demo, more shows were added to the already busy band schedule, including opening slots for MORBID ANGEL, ENTOMBED, IMMOLATION, CANNIBAL CORPSE, OBLIVEON and a Quebec mini tour with BROKEN HOPE. The band went back to the studio once again with Pierre Remillard for the recording of their second demo, which eventually turned into the INVERTED DECAY 7 EP, released by the young, at the time, off-shot French label ADIPOCERE records. More shows followed with local death monsters and road buddies ANTHAGONIST, followed by the recording of the bands 3rd demo (IN HARMONY WITH THE DECEASED) with yet again Mr. Remillard at the helm. A few shows later (with notably local heroes B.A.R.F.), PURULENCE signed a deal with ADIPOCERE for a split CD and one full length recording with ADIPOCERE. Both new guitarist and bassist Donald Boisvert was replaced by Frederick Simard (bass) and Sebastien Beaulieu (guitar) from ANTHAGONIST. The new line up recorded the song Sinking Into Transparency which was added up to the 3rd demo and re-released by ADIPOCERE as the PURULENCE / AMAYMON split CD. Steeve was eventually asked to join GORGUTS as session guitarist fort their European tour with BLASPHEMY. A few months after its return, he joined GORGUTS full time, writing extensively on OBSCURA, the GORGUTS most recognized album ever! Stephane, Frederick and Sebastien regrouped and one new song was written! The trio started auditioning new musicians to complete the line up but eventually disbanded after a couple of months. Nowadays, Steeve remains an active musician. He is presently putting together NEGATIVA and his solo project SERPENTUM FIXATION |
